How At-Home Chemical Peels Can Help Transform Your Complexion

While the term chemical peel sounds very clinical, it’s a perfectly safe and effective procedure to add to your skin care regime. Chemical peels are now available for at-home use and they can help to completely transform your complexion.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is simply a high-strength skin exfoliant that can help with a host of skin issues. Often these peels include AHA’s (Alpha-Hydroxy Acids), BHA’s (Beta-Hydroxy Acids) and naturally-derived Enzymes in higher concentrations than regular serums.

What do Chemical Peels Do?

As the name suggests, they promote the skin to peel and boost cell turnover, leaving smoother, clearer skin underneath. Chemical peels come with a range of benefits, below are just a few:

Unclog Pores

Chemical peels containing BHA, or Salicylic Acid as it’s more commonly known will help to unclog your pores and clear up acne blemishes. Salicylic Acid is an excellent ingredient that works to exfoliate the inner walls of the pores and regulate sebum activity.

Brighten Skin Tone, Smooth texture

AHA’s such as Glycolic and Lactic Acid are also fantastic exfoliants that work to remove the outermost layer of dead, rough skin cells off your face, revealing brighter, smoother skin.

Treat Hyperpigmentation and Age Spots

By exfoliating the skin, cellular regeneration is promoted and cell turnover is increased. This can treat hyperpigmentation, age spots, and other skin discolouration problems.

Treat Acne

Salicylic Acid is on the WHO’s List of Essential Medicines, and it’s not hard to see why either. Salicylic Acid has been used to treat acne for years, and it works effectively to unclog pores as well as promote cell turnover. Salicylic Acid also minimises redness and irritation, therefore minimising the appearance and severity of acne.

Prevent Aging, Boost Collagen Production

Acids such as Glycolic Acid in high concentrations can promote collagen production. This increase in collagen can help minimise fine lines and wrinkles, as well as tighten your pores.

Which Chemical Peel Should I Buy?

The type of chemical peel you purchase will of course be down to what you’re trying to achieve with your skin:

Unclog Pores, Brighten Skin Tone

This is our favourite chemical peel. If you’re trying to unclog your pores and brighten skin tone, we recommend a peel with Salicylic Acid. Try The Ordinary – AHA 30% + BHA 2% Peeling Solution. This peel contains the both AHAs and BHAs to exfoliate the skin thoroughly, and clear pore congestion.

Treat Acne

You’ll want a peel with Salicylic Acid. The above peel by The Ordinary would work just fine for Acne, but there are higher concentrations of BHA available.

We’ve found a 30% Salicylic Acid peel on Amazon which is a high concentration that will offer excellent results. Be wary when using a concentration this high, you must not leave it on for any longer than ten minutes as this can cause severe skin irritation. Note that if you’re new to chemical peels, perhaps considering using a smaller or diluted amount, or find a peel with a lower concentration to first build up tolerance. As with any product ensure you patch test prior to full use.

Anti-Aging, Boost Collagen, TREAT SCARS

High strength Glycolic Acid peels can help promote collagen production, minimise fine lines and wrinkles and help fade scars. The added benefit of Glycolic Acid is that it works like any other AHA, sloughs off dead skin leaving a smoother, brighter complexion. Try Sobel Skin RX, 30% Glycolic Acid peel.

Of course there are hundreds of products on the market and it’s best to shop around until you find one that suits your goals. We hope this has given you a little insight into chem peels and how they can completely transform your face🌞
