Bakuchiol is not an acne treatment. It gets sold like one because "retinol alternative" sounds as if it should unclog pores. Retinol sits in a family that includes real acne medicines. Bakuchiol does not. Borrowing the marketing does not borrow the licence.
If your face is breaking out, spend the effort on ingredients with a job history: salicylic acid, azelaic acid, benzoyl peroxide, adapalene, tretinoin. Bakuchiol can live in the moisturiser around those. It should not replace them.
What the evidence is actually about
The study that made bakuchiol famous measured wrinkles and pigmentation over 12 weeks, not inflamed acne counts. Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in the lab is interesting. It is not the same as reducing C. acnes, unsticking comedones, or matching a 2% BHA.
You will find small papers and brand tests waving at "blemishes" and "imperfections". Cosmetic language. If bakuchiol cleared acne the way adapalene does, dermatologists would have switched the poster.
So: a few people notice fewer congested patches, especially if they dropped a harsh retinoid and their barrier calmed down. That is often the routine getting quieter, not bakuchiol exfoliating a blackhead.
Why the retinol comparison misleads
Retinoids help acne by speeding up how trapped cells shed and by calming the follicle. That's a vitamin A receptor story.
Bakuchiol is not vitamin A. Bakuchiol vs retinol and bakuchiol vs retinal are ageing-and-tolerance comparisons. For acne, retinal and retinol still belong to the team that can help. Bakuchiol belongs to the team that might not make things worse.
Oils and rich creams can make things worse. A squalane booster or seed-oil moisturiser on a congestion-prone face is a vehicle problem. If you break out after Bybi drops or the Inkey cream, look at the texture before assuming it is a purge. Bakuchiol is not known for a classic retinoid purge. New spots after a rich oil are often just clogged pores.
What to use instead (and alongside)
Inflamed red spots and leftover marks: azelaic acid. 10% OTC in the UK, prescription 15–20% if that's not enough.
Blackheads and greasy T-zone: salicylic acid, used regularly, not as a one-off mask.
Stubborn or hormonal acne: see a GP. Topical retinoids, combined gels, sometimes hormonal treatment. Skincare blogs are not that appointment.
Bakuchiol's lane: if you also care about fine lines and you cannot use a retinoid, keep bakuchiol as the anti-ageing extra. How to use it: not on top of three acids. Patch test. Give texture goals months, not your cystic chin.
A moisturiser with bakuchiol is a reasonable bland-ish cream for someone whose acne routine already has a treatment. A bakuchiol serum as the only "acne step" is a stall.
Don't buy the combo for acne either
Paula's Choice 0.3% retinol + 2% bakuchiol may help texture and some breakouts because of the retinol, not because 2% bakuchiol is an acne serum. If you cannot tolerate retinol, that bottle is the wrong workaround. If you can, a dedicated acne retinoid (adapalene 0.1% is the usual pharmacy move) is the more targeted spend.
Using bakuchiol and retinol together for ageing is optional. Using them together so you can skip salicylic acid is backwards.
Sensitive, acne-prone, and "gentle"
Sensitive skin plus acne is a real combination. The fix is usually a gentle cleanser, a barrier-aware moisturiser, and one proven acne active, not a plant retinol story.
Beginners with spots: start the acne ingredient. Add bakuchiol later if you still want it for lines.
Morning bakuchiol plus SPF is fine. SPF matters for marks. Bakuchiol does not replace it.
The verdict
Do not sell yourself bakuchiol as an acne treatment. It is a milder anti-ageing extra with modest evidence for lines and tone. Acne needs ingredients that have actually been asked to treat acne.
If a bakuchiol cream makes your skin calmer because you stopped peeling it with retinol, good. Keep the cream. Add azelaic or salicylic for the spots.
FAQs
Does bakuchiol help acne?
Not in a way you should rely on. Any improvement is usually modest, indirect, or down to a gentler routine. Use proven acne actives.
Can bakuchiol replace retinol for breakouts?
No. Retinoids have the acne evidence. Bakuchiol has a small ageing file and better average tolerance.
Does bakuchiol cause purging?
It shouldn't, not like a retinoid. New congestion is more often the oil or cream base.
What should I use for acne instead?
Salicylic acid for congestion, azelaic acid for red spots and marks, a retinoid if you can tolerate one, and a GP if it's cystic or scarring.
