Can You Use Bakuchiol in the Morning?

You can use bakuchiol in the morning. You still need sunscreen. Those two sentences are the article, but the why matters, because this is the feature people use to justify skipping SPF or stacking three actives before work.

Classic retinol is a night ingredient: it breaks down in light more readily, and retinoids make daily SPF non-negotiable. Bakuchiol is more photostable. Brands therefore tell you AM and PM. That is generally fair. It is not a UV filter.

Why morning is allowed

Photostability means the molecule is less likely to fall apart on a sunny windowsill or on your face at 8am. Retinol in an old, poorly packed formula can degrade; bakuchiol holds up better in that comparison. That is a chemistry point, not a medical exemption.

Some people also like an antioxidant-ish leave-on in the day. Bakuchiol has antioxidant activity in lab work. Treat that as a nice extra, not as a substitute for vitamin C or for shade.

If you want the retinoid in the evening and something gentler under makeup, morning bakuchiol is a clean split. That is the most useful version of using both.

You still wear SPF

UV ages skin whether your serum is plant-derived or not. Pigment you hoped bakuchiol would soften will not fade if you commute without sunscreen. Photostable ≠ photoprotective.

Put bakuchiol on first (or use a bakuchiol moisturiser as the cream), then sunscreen as the last skincare step. If you use makeup, SPF still goes on skin, not mixed into foundation as the only protection.

Mineral or chemical, whatever you'll reapply. The bakuchiol does not change the SPF rules in why sunscreen matters.

A simple morning routine

  1. Cleanse or rinse.
  2. Optional: niacinamide or a hydrating serum.
  3. Bakuchiol serum/drops, or skip if the moisturiser contains it.
  4. Moisturiser if needed.
  5. SPF.

Layer thin to thick. Oils last among the skincare, still under sunscreen. If a squalane booster makes SPF slide or pill, use two drops not six, or keep bakuchiol for night.

How to use bakuchiol covers amounts: you do not need a thicker layer because the sun is out.

When to keep it for night anyway

  • Your morning is already vitamin C + azelaic + moisturiser and the face is at capacity. Add bakuchiol PM instead.
  • The product is a rich cream that pills under every SPF you've tried.
  • You're using a retinol + bakuchiol treatment such as Paula's Choice 0.3% + 2%. That is a night retinoid. Don't wear it to the office.
  • Skin is reactive in the day (heat, rosacea flush). A bland AM and bakuchiol at night may feel better. Sensitive-skin notes apply.

Retinal stays a night ingredient even if bakuchiol doesn't. Don't take "I use bakuchiol in the morning" as permission to use retinal at breakfast.

Does morning use work faster?

The 2019 comparison used bakuchiol twice daily. Twice a day uses more product and may help you be consistent. It will not turn eight to twelve weeks into a fortnight.

Once daily, morning or night, is enough to run the experiment. Pick the slot you'll remember. Morning is handy if nights are when you already use a retinoid or you forget PM steps.

Pregnancy and "daytime = safer"

Time of day does not change the pregnancy question. Bakuchiol is used as a retinoid stand-in; it is not proven safe because you applied it at 7am. What we know and don't, then ask a midwife or GP.

The verdict

Morning bakuchiol is fine for most formulas that aren't also a retinoid. Sunscreen on top is not optional. If the cream fights your SPF, use bakuchiol at night instead.

FAQs

Can I use bakuchiol in the morning and retinol at night?

Yes. That's one of the tidier ways to combine them. Sunscreen in the morning still matters because of the retinol as well as the sun.

Does bakuchiol make you sun-sensitive?

It isn't a classic photosensitising retinoid. You still need SPF because UV damage doesn't pause for plant extracts.

Can I put SPF over bakuchiol?

Yes. Wait a minute if things pill. Use less bakuchiol if they still do.

Is it better to use bakuchiol in the morning or at night?

Whichever you'll do consistently. Morning if you want it under SPF or you're using a retinoid at night. Night if your AM is already crowded or the texture is rich.
