Aging skin is something everyone deals with eventually. Fine lines, dark circles, sagging and wrinkles all creep in as collagen production slows. The good news is that a handful of serum ingredients genuinely do slow and partially reverse visible aging, and you don't need to spend a fortune to get them.
What actually works in an anti-aging serum
Before the picks, know what you're shopping for. Three ingredient families carry almost all of the evidence:
- Retinoids (retinol, retinal): the gold standard. They boost collagen synthesis and cell turnover, softening fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots over months of use. Here's our full retinol guide.
- Vitamin C: an antioxidant that neutralises the free radicals responsible for premature aging, brightens tone and supports collagen. Best worn in the morning under SPF.
- Hydrators (hyaluronic acid, glycerin): they don't rebuild collagen, but well-hydrated skin visibly plumps, which softens fine lines immediately.
And the unglamorous truth: no serum outperforms daily sunscreen, since UV drives most visible aging. Serums plus SPF is the combination; serums alone is a leaky bucket.
Below are the top 5 anti-aging serums we recommend:
1. Paula's Choice 1% Retinol Booster (around £50)

This is our favourite Retinol serum by Paula's Choice. This 1% retinol booster works to target fine lines and wrinkles, improves skin tone and reduces pore size. The formulation is light-weight and won't clog pores. Ceramides and peptides are also included in the formula, these work to improve the skin's moisture barrier and restore skin hydration.
2. Viola Skin Retinol Face Serum with Hyaluronic Acid (around £15)

Retinol is one of the most potent anti-aging ingredients available on the skincare market. Retinol, a derivative of Vitamin A, works to promote collagen synthesis and therefore reduce visible signs of aging. Continued use can fade fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and scarring.
This serum by Viola Skin is a potent solution containing retinol, hyaluronic acid and vitamin E for an all-round anti-aging treatment.
3. Viola Skin Vitamin C Serum with Hyaluronic Acid (around £15)

This premium Vitamin C serum by Viola Skin contains a potent 20% Amino Vitamin C blend with Hyaluronic acid. Vitamin C is an excellent anti-oxidant which works to neutralise free radicals on the skin. It's these free radicals that are often responsible for skin damage and premature skin aging.
The addition of hyaluronic acid provides much needed hydration for aging skin, and immediately minimises fine lines.
4. L'Oreal Paris Hydra Genius Aloe Water (around £7)

This formulation by L'Oreal Paris contains hyaluronic acid and aloe vera in a water based solution for hydrating, non-greasy finish. This solution locks in much needed moisture for up to 72 hours, and the addition of aloe vera provides anti-inflammatory and cooling effects. A perfect all-round moisturiser for most skin types.
5. L'Oreal Paris Revitalift Filler Ampoules (around £15)

These are fantastic little ampoules by L'Oreal Paris that work to lock in skin moisture and penetrate deep into the skin to provide much needed hydration. After just 1 use the skin is softer and plumper, minimising fine lines and wrinkles. After 7 days, the skin is tighter, firmer, and bouncier with a healthy glow.
How to build these into a routine
Don't use all five at once. A sensible anti-aging routine is: vitamin C serum in the morning followed by moisturiser and SPF, then a retinol serum two to three nights a week (building up gradually), with a hydrating serum on the nights in between. Introduce one new product at a time, patch test first, and give retinol at least 12 weeks before judging results. Consistency beats intensity every time.
