Tranexamic acid is one of the more interesting crossovers from medicine into skincare. It was developed decades ago to control bleeding during surgery, and it's still used for that today. Along the way, dermatologists noticed something unexpected: patients on tranexamic acid saw their melasma fade. What is tranexamic acid?
TXA is a synthetic derivative of the amino acid lysine. Despite the name, it isn't an exfoliating acid like glycolic or salicylic, so it won't peel or sting the way exfoliants can. It works through a completely different route: it interferes with the chain of signals (via a protein called plasmin) that tells your pigment-producing cells to make more melanin. Less signalling, less excess pigment, gradually fainter dark patches.
That mechanism matters because it targets pigment where it starts, rather than scrubbing at pigment that's already there.
What TXA can do for your skin
Fade melasma. This is TXA's headline act and where the research is strongest. Melasma, the hormonally-driven patches of pigmentation often triggered by pregnancy or contraceptive pills, is notoriously stubborn, and TXA is one of the few topical ingredients with genuinely good evidence against it. Dermatologists also prescribe it orally for severe cases, which tells you how seriously the ingredient is taken.
Soften dark spots and post-blemish marks. The same pigment-calming mechanism helps with sun spots and the dark marks left behind after breakouts (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation). One honest caveat: TXA is a slow burner. Pigmentation takes months to form and months to fade, so expect to use it consistently for 8 to 12 weeks before judging results.
How to use tranexamic acid
Topical TXA is refreshingly easy to live with:
- Concentration: most serums use 2-5%, which is well tolerated even by sensitive skin.
- When: morning or night (or both), applied after cleansing and before moisturiser. Many TXA products, like The Inkey List's, are designed as night treatments.
- Pair it wisely. TXA plays well with niacinamide, vitamin C and azelaic acid, and pairing brighteners that work through different mechanisms genuinely speeds things up.
- Wear SPF religiously. This is non-negotiable. Sun exposure is what created the pigment and it will happily recreate it. Without daily sunscreen, TXA is a waste of money.
- Patch test anything new, as always.
For melasma specifically, it's worth seeing a GP or dermatologist rather than self-treating indefinitely. Prescription options (including oral TXA and combination creams) work faster than anything over the counter.
